Ten Red Apples

Ten Red Apples was written and illustrated by Pat Hutchins. Hutchins does a great job relaying the story ten red apples on a tree that are each eaten by a different farm animal. This story uses rhyming verses which will keep children intrigued and leave them wondering: Which farm animal will eat an apple next!?
 

 
This children's poetry book that uses verse rhymes was paired with naive art styled illustrations. The pictures throughout the book add to the fun use of word play listed on each page. Readers can see the number of apples on the apple tree diminishing with each new animal that comes along, on to the animals that pile up on the right side of the page.
 
What makes this story so fun is its sophisticated and well organized word play that is used through the character of the farmer.  The plot continuously moves along to the point you are left asking: "Will there be any apples left for the farmer?" It is clear to see that children would become engaged in this book because of the fun verse rhymes.
 
Teachers should read this story to students between preschool and 3rd grade. Children will enjoy the acrylic illustrations throughout the book as well as the storyline that involves counting apples off of a tree. While reading this story, teachers should ask questions such as: What do you think will happen next? Which animal do you think will eat an apple next? Do you think any apples will be left for the farmer? Why or why not? What is the message of this story? What did the story mean to you?
 
Class activities:
 
1. Explore the five senses using an apple. What does an apple look like, taste like, feel like, smell like, sound like? Make a classroom chart to organize each student's interpretation.
 
2. Make an apple tree out of construction paper, tissue paper, etc.
 
3. Make stained glass apples with tissue paper, glue, scissors, etc.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline. These two people did a fantastic job relaying the story of a china rabbit who finds himself on a journey with many different owners along the way. This story is such an endearing and inspirational read that will leave readers wondering: Will Edward Tulane be able to open his heart?
 

This fantasy fiction chapter book was paired with Bagram Ibatoulline's acrylic gouache illustrations. The pictures throughout the book enhance the storyline and help readers to better picture what Edward, other characters, and some of the settings look like. Readers can see details such as Edwards newly repaired ears, on to the cracks in the antique doll's face.
 
 
What makes this story so intriguing is its well defined conflict and vast array of characters and their different personalities. The plot develops with each new owner Edward encounters and changes to reveal Edward's new emotions that he must deal with?" Children would become engaged in this book to find out what happens next in Edward Tulane's journey and to see if he can open his heart to love.
 
Teachers should read this story to students between 2nd and 5th grade. Children will enjoy the realistic illustrations throughout the book as well as the important message there is waiting to be revealed. While reading this story, teachers should ask questions such as: What do you think will happen next? Does Edward love Abilene? Do you think Edward will love his new owner Nellie? Do you think Edward loves Bull and Lucy? Why or why not? Does Edward love Sarah Ruth and Bryce? What are Edward's feelings when he leaves each of these owners? Does Edward try to shut love out after being torn from his owners? What is the moral of this story? What did the story mean to you?
 
Class activities:
 
1. Have each student think of if they have ever lost something they loved and treasured. Have them write an essay about the situation, and how they felt after they lost the item. Include a drawing or painting of the item that was lost.
 
2. Make a chart of a the characters and their treatment toward Edward. While some characters loved and adored Edward, others did not care about him, and some were absolutely cruel towards him. Contemplate the many differences of treatment between each character.
 
3. Have each student paint or draw their favorite character in the book and add a description.

Pinduli

Pinduli was written and illustrated by Janell Cannon. Cannon did an amazing job relaying the story of a hyena named Pinduli who teaches other creatures in the African safari that words can really hurt. This story is a heartwarming read, that will leave children wondering: Will Pinduli overcome the mean words that have been said to her?
 

This children's picture book fantasy was paired with realistic representational styled illustrations. The pictures throughout the capture the readers attention and enhance the storyline. Readers can see Pinduli's true hyena coat, on to the setting of the African safari full with rock cliffs and vast hills.
 
 
What makes this story so captivating is its story line that evokes emotion out of the reader . The plot develops and Pinduli becomes picked on more and more until the reader is left thinking: "Will Pinduli be able to realize that she is beautiful despite mean words from others?" Children would definitely become engaged in this book to learn the important moral that is central to this story.
 
Teachers should read this story to students between Kindergarten and 3rd grade. Children will enjoy the realistic illustrations that are shown throughout the book as well as the important message there is waiting to be revealed. While reading this story, teachers should ask questions such as: What do you think will happen next? Are the other animals being kind to Pinduli? Do you think Pinduli should change the way she looks? Is it nice to say hurtful comments to others? Why or why not? What is the moral of this story? What did the story mean to you?
 
Class activities:
 
1. Discuss superstitions such as ghosts, black cats, the number 13, etc. Investigate how superstitions get started and relate/compare/contrast the findings to how the superstition began in Pinduli.
 
2. Create a classroom mural on a long sheet of paper of all of the African safari animals that students can think of that were shown in Pinduli .
 
3. Have each child choose an imaginary animal/pet of their choice and create an imaginary conversation with the pet via an essay.

George Did It

George Did It was written by Suzanne Tripp Jurmain and illustrated by Larry Day. These two people did a wonderful job relaying the story of George Washington who was actually quite reluctant to become the first president. This story is an informational and interesting read, that will leave children wondering: Was our first President really so apprehensive of the job at first!?

 
This historical biography fiction was paired with Larry Day's cartoon watercolor styled illustrations. The pictures throughout the book are quite whimsical in a sense, but still capture the time period that Washington lived in. We can see the pinkish blue colored sky in the background to the clothing that Washington is wearing that depicts the different time era.

 
 
What makes this story so interesting is its factual unknown details about the first President. The idea that Washington actually didn't want to become President will leave readers wondering: "What else do I not know about George Washington?" It is clear to see that children would become engaged in this book to learn more about George Washington and his journey that led up to him becoming President.
 
Teachers should read this story to students between Kindergarten and 5th grade. Children will enjoy the comic styled illustrations throughout the book as well as the interesting information there is waiting to be revealed. While reading this story, teachers should ask questions such as: What do you think will happen next? Why didn't George want to become President? 1. Construct a timeline of George Washington's lifetime and include illustrations.
 
2. Have children come up with a play to re-enact Washington's choice to become President.

Anakin in Action! (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Anakin in Action! (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) was written by Simon Beecroft. The illustrations seem to be produced by a team of individuals; the art director is Troy Alders.  The team of people who created this book did a really great job of relaying a futuristic story that involves bravery, courage, and heroism. This story is great for children who are beginning to read alone, and will leave them asking: Will Anakin be able to save Rotta!?

 

This children's science fiction was paired with computer animation styled illustrations. The pictures throughout the book grab the reader's attention and pull them into a futuristic realm. We can see the look of determination on Anakin's face throughout his journey to the futuristic droids that he faces.
 
 
What makes this story so intriguing is its well defined conflict that is set in the future. The plot develops and thickens to the point you are left asking: "Will Anakin defeat the droids?" It is clear to see that children would become engaged in this book because of its futuristic elements and ease of ability to read.
 
Teachers should read this story to students between 1st and 3rd grade. Children will enjoy the lively picture illustrations throughout the book as well as the adventurous storyline. While reading this story, teachers should ask questions such as: What do you think will happen next? What are droids? What do you think of the clone soldiers? Was Anakin doing the right thing by rescuing Rotta? Why or why not? What is the moral of this story? What did the story mean to you?
